Now you can watch a spot of television while visiting your local grocery
store.
Quality Foods has installed Captive Channel, which gives the shopper the
opportunity to view entertainment, in-store sales and promotions, Port
Alberni weather, local events, news and more.
"We're just getting the bugs
worked out." said QF manager Bill Flynn.
"There's commercials, there's
products that we carry, there's actual chefs that are on the screen
preparing meals, so if the customer has the time and wants to watch, they
can learn how to make the meal."
Eight of the flat screen TVs were
installed approximately a month ago and are placed back to back in four
sections of the store: deli, produce, dairy and at the checkout tills.
So
far, it's been a hit with the customers, Flynn said.
"They like it, they
like the idea that they can see what the weather's like, and the time." he
said. "The first response was the sounds. People were saying it's too loud."
"This is so new, there's so much more that's going to be coming." he added.
Not only the Port Alberni Quality Foods the first to acquire Captive
Channel, but there are only three grocery food chains on Vancouver Island
that have installed television screens in their stores, Flynn said.
"We
went to a trade show in Ontario and there was a booth with these fellows
offering it to grocery stores." he explained.
Captive Channel is the only
digital signage network that can be personalized not only for each
community, but also for each store.
The system works via the Internet
through Captive Channel's host computer. This gives Captive Channel the
opportunity to upload the latest information weekly or even daily in store
sales to any screen at a moments notice. Content and graphics (aside from
commercials) are all created in house, making it easy for the retailer to
receive new information and digital imagery as often as required.
"The
computer team at head office are the ones that generate what goes on, as far
as commercials go." Flynn explained. "Our computer guys are working on daily
trying to upgrade it and make it more fun."
There are currently 1021 TV
screens in 162 grocery retailers across Canada. For a list of the stores,
